Mickey’s Debut At The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Mickey's Debut At The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

The very first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in 1924. Just 10 years later, in 1934, Mickey Mouse made his debut in what was at the time called the Macy’s Santa Claus Parade. The balloon which measured 40 feet-tall was designed by Walt Disney and Macy’s Tony Sarg, the man responsible for inventing the marionette inspired parade balloons we know today. To lead Mickey through the parade route, a team of 25 balloon handlers dressed in Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse costumes.

In addition to the giant Mickey Mouse balloon, the 1934 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade also featured several other Disney characters. There was a smaller Pluto balloon and a 12.5 foot-tall Horace Horsecollar balloon. The highly successful Three Little Pigs cartoon was also represented at the  parade with a 34 foot-tall Big Bad Wolf balloon and a 31 foot-tall Little Pig.

Sounds like that one should have been called the Disney Thanksgiving Day Parade! 🙂

I know! Seems like quite a few Disney balloons for one parade…not that that’s a problem. 🙂
