If I had to pick one, The Little Mermaid is probably my favorite Disney movie. I have loved singing along to the film’s memorable songs for as long as I can remember. Whether it’s watching the movie, listening to the soundtrack, or watching the Voyage of The Little Mermaid show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I’m always happy to hear ArielSebastian, and friends singing these classic songs written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Naturally, I was thrilled to have the chance to review The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid which was released recently for the film’s 25th anniversary!

The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid includes two discs of music. On disc one, you will find your favorite songs from the film such as “Part of Your World” and “Under The Sea” in addition to the beautifully written score of the film. All of these tracks wereremastered in 2014 and sound great! I loved singing along and re-living the film through thissoundtrack.

Disc two is really the highlight of The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid! This disc features work tapes and demos of many of the film’s songs performed by the talented songwriters Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. I love listening to songs performed by the people who wrote them. Whether it’s listening to recording of The Sherman Brothers singing their popular Disney tunes or listening to the songwriters here in Nashville, the writers have a way of conveying more emotion into the song and really connecting with the audience. A while ago, I heard Alan Menken speak about a time during the writing process for The Little Mermaid. He stated Howard Ashman put so much emotion into the song as he was performing “Part of Your World” that you could really believe he was a mermaid longing to be a part of the human world. I was so excited to hear the “Part of Your World” demo included in The Legacy Collection. Just hearing the audio, you could tell the writers put so much of their hearts into this beautiful song.

In addition to hearing the songwriters perform The Little Mermaid songs, disc two also gives some insight into the film-making process. Several of the demos included extra verses which never made it into the actual film. The work tape of “Fathoms Below” includes a verse which reveals Ursula is King Triton’s sister who was banished and plans to one day find a way to rule all of the ocean. This concept didn’t make it into the final version of the film. One of the “Poor Unfortunate Souls” demos featured in this collection also includes an extra verse not found in the film. I greatly enjoyed listening to this demo, as well as the Final Synth Mockupof the song which was much more similar to the film’s version of “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” You will definitely want to listen to the wonderful work tapes and demos featured in The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid!

I have greatly enjoyed listening to The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid and would recommend it for any fan of the film. The Legacy Collection albums are a great way to celebrate the music and history of so many classic Disney films. The fifth release from The Legacy Collection will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Fantasia with a 4-disc set, which includes the Original Leopold Stokowski soundtrack, the digital re-recording by IrwinKostal, bonus tracks and more on January 13, 2015. The Legacy Collection Fantasia is now available for pre-order at Amazon{affiliate link}.You can also find your favorite Disneymusic on the Disney Music Emporium website.
