Fastpass To History: The Original WDW Resorts

The Original WDW Resorts - The Contemporary

When Walt Disney World first opened in 1971, there were only three resorts on the property. Do you know which are the three original resorts?

When I found out there were only three resorts open in 1971, I naturally assumed it was the three monorail resorts near the Magic Kingdom. However, those are not the three original resorts. The original WDW resorts are The Polynesian Village Resort, The Contemporary Resort, and Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

As you may have heard, The Polynesian which has since has a name change, will be getting some renovations, as well as, reverting to its opening day name of The Polynesian Village Resort. The Contemporary Resort features a modern A-frame design with a monorail going through the center and is still, over 30 years later, a very contemporary resort. Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground provides a more rustic experience. Guests can stay in cabins or go camping.

Have you stayed at any of the three original Walt Disney World resorts? Let us know which is your favorite in the comments below!

Love the history – yes we have stayed in all three. Though I truly love the Poly, I have a ton of history with Fort Wilderness as this was where we stayed throughout my childhood. Thanks for the history and hosting us!

Fort Wilderness is the only one I’ve stayed at. We stayed in the cabins once. They’re very nice.

I grew up going to the Poly (first trip at 1 years old in 1983!). But they’ve changed it so much now, it’s no longer home for me 🙁

How fun! You’ve been going to Disney practically your whole life! I’ve never stayed at the Poly, but I visit it every trip.

I’ve not stayed at any of the originals. 🙁 I need to change that!

I have only stayed at the Contemporary….love it. Large rooms and GREAT locatoin to parks and monorail. I wish I could afford for every trip, but alas, only for race weekends when splitting with 3 other runner friends or special occasions for the family. I want to stay at the Poly!
