Fastpass To History: Honey, I Shrunk The Audience

Honey I Shrunk The Audience

Honey, I Shrunk The Audience was one of my favorite attractions at Epcot. Guests would attend the Inventor of the Year Award ceremony at the Imagination Pavilion. Wayne Szalinski was the honoree at this special ceremony. You may remember him from the Honey, I Shrunk The Kids films.

This attraction was sponsored by Kodak and featured a great pre-show. The pre-show featured Dr. Nigel Channing who gave us a little introduction to why Wayne Szalinski was chosen for this honor. It also featured a slideshow of photos synchronized to the song True Colors. Now, whenever I hear this song, I can’t help but think of Honey, I Shrunk The Audience.

Honey I Shrunk The Audience - Inventor Of The Year

After the pre-show, guests were asked to move into the Imagination Institute’s theater for the ceremony. A tiny Wayne Szalinski would then fly into the theater before crash landing his Hoverpod. While they search for the guest of honor, his son Nick proceeded to demonstrate several of his father’s inventions.

As you would imagine, these demonstrations don’t go quite according to plan. The chaos that ensues involved multiplying mice. It was always fun to watch the reaction of first time guests during that part!

Once Wayne returned to normal size, he came out on the stage to demonstrate the use of his shrinking machine to make the family luggage a more manageable size for traveling; however, this also didn’t go quite right. As the attraction name suggests, Wayne ended up shrinking the entire audience instead!

As a result of shrinking, the audience had quite an adventure. They were blinded by the camera flash at the hands of the youngest Szalinski child, Adam. He then proceeded to pick up the “little people” to show them to Mommy. As if that’s not enough excitement, there was also a close encounter with Nick’s snake, Gigabyte. The family dog saved the day by scaring off the snake.

After much excitement, the audience was finally returned to normal size; however, in the process, the family dog was made larger than life! At the end of the ceremony, the giant dog sneezed on the audience. This was another great part of the show to watch those first time guests!
