Fastpass To History: Disneyland’s Golden Spires

Disneyland's Golden Spires - Sleeping Beauty Castle

While Disneyland was being constructed, Walt Disney wanted every detail to be perfect. He was always looking for ways to “plus” the park and enhance the guest experience. No detail was too small for Walt.

In order to make the castle sparkle, Walt Disney wanted to put real gold on the spires atop Sleeping Beauty Castle; however, his brother Roy, who managed the company’s finances was opposed to this idea for obvious reasons. But of course, that didn’t stop Walt.

Walt waited until Roy was out of town and then had the castle spires plated in 22 karat gold. Just as he had planned, this made the castle spires sparkle in the sun. Roy found out about the gold plated spires upon his return and was not too thrilled about them.

All but one of the Sleeping Beauty Castle spires are plated in gold. Supposedly Walt did this to symbolize that Disneyland would never be completed.

Have you seen the golden spires atop Sleeping Beauty Castle?
