Disney’s Aladdin: What You Didn’t Know

Disney's Aladdin: What You Didn't Know

In 1992, Disney released a new animated film called Aladdin. This film quickly become another Disney animated classic. Over the past 22 years, we have watched and re-watched these loveable characters and sang along with the film’s award winning soundtrack. Many Disney fans could tell you a lot about Disney’s 31st animated film. Let’s take a look at some of the interesting facts you might not know about Disney’s Aladdin.

  • Disney’s Aladdin is based on the Arab folklore of Aladdin from The Book of One Thousand And One Nights (The Arabian Nights).
  • Scott Weinger, who you probably know as Steve (D.J.’s boyfriend) from Full House, is the voice of Aladdin. In an episode of Full House, Steve ends up playing Aladdin in the parade at Walt Disney World.
  • In order to properly animate the movement of Aladdin’s pants, the animators studied MC Hammer music videos.
  • Supposedly Aladdin was modeled after Tom Cruise.
  • Martin Short, John Goodman, and Albert Brooks were all considered for the voice of Genie before Robin Williams was cast for the part.
  • There were a couple of great Disney songs which didn’t make it into the final version of the film. The first of which is called Why Me.

  • There were originally going to be two genies in the film. One would have been the genie of the lamp. The other would have been the genie of the ring. As you know, only the genie of the lamp made it to the final version.
  • The audience did not clap after the musical sequences of the film during early movie screenings. So the animators added an “Applause” sign at the end of Friend Like Me. This actually made it into the final version of Aladdin.
  • Each time Aladdin tells a lie, the feather on his hat falls down in his face.
  • Robin Williams ad-libbed much of the film. So much so that they had nearly 16 hours of material recorded. In fact, the script was not considered for a Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award because of all the ad-libs.
  • At one point during the filmmaking process, Aladdin’s mother had a part in the movie. Unfortunately, she was ultimately cut from the story. With her departure also went the song Proud Of Your Boy.

  • The character of Jafar was actually based on another Disney villain – Maleficent. Both villains have a staff and a bird. They have similar facial shapes. They also both transform into large animals for battle.
  • In addition to Genie, Robin Williams also voiced the street peddler at the film’s opening. All of those lines were not scripted. The animators placed a sheet covering several objects on a table and asked Robin to describe the items without looking at them.
  • If you’re wondering why Robin Williams voiced the street peddler, it’s because at one point the street peddler was intended to be Genie in disguise.
  • Aladdin was the 14th film to gross over $200 million. It was the first animated film to do so.
  • The Goofy hat and Hawaiian shirt Genie wears at the end of the movie are in tribute to Back To Neverland, the film Robin Williams did as part of The Magic Of Animation tour at Disney-MGM Studios.

Is the street peddler the one that talks about the Dead Sea Tupperware? That’s one of my favorite lines in the movie!

I was obsessed with this movie and soundtrack when it came out. I thought it was interesting to learn how Jafar was modeled after Maleficent.

I was surprised by that as well. But now that I know he was modeled after her, I can definitely see the similarities.
