The Disney Fantasy is the fourth and newest ship in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet of cruise ships. After nearly two years of construction, the ship set sail on its maiden voyage on March 31, 2012. The Fantasy is almost identical structurally to its sister ship the Disney Dream and weighs in at 130,000 gross tons. The length of the Disney Fantasy is 1,115 feet, making it longer than both the Chrysler Building in New York City and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The ship’s maximum width is 125 feet. The 1,250 staterooms found on the Disney Fantasy allow for a maximum capacity of 4,000 passengers.
Once guests step into the atrium lobby of the Disney Fantasy, they are dazzled by the gorgeous surroundings. The lobby features a sweeping grand staircase, a grand piano, and a marble & stone inlay floor. The focal point of the lobby is a large chandelier measuring 10 feet in diameter. The chandelier is made of pink, green, and blue stained glass and over 60,000 crystal beads. The pièce de résistance of the Disney Fantasy’s lobby is a bronze statue of Mademoiselle Minnie. Inspired by travel of the 1920s and 1930s, Minnie is seen dressed in vintage clothing, holding a parasol with her steamer luggage by her side.
As with all Disney Cruise Line ships, you will find some loveable Disney characters decorating the stern of the Disney Fantasy. Dumbo and Timothy can be seen painting some finishing touches on the stern of the ship. Dumbo’s ear-span is approximately seven feet, while his length is slightly over eight feet. A two-foot six inches tall Timothy can be found sitting in Dumbo’s hat and holding a large paintbrush. Toghether, Dumbo and Timothy weigh over 2,300 pounds. Dumbo was sculpted out of large foam blocks by imagineers in California. He was then shipped to Florida where a stainless steel frame was created and covered with fiberglass and paint. Next, Dumbo and Timothy traveled to Germany where they were installed on the ship’s stern.
The Disney Fantasy is truly a remarkable ship. Its size and elegance combined with Disney’s attention to detail make it a great vacation destination! Have you sailed on the Disney Fantasy? We would love to know what you thought of it in the comments below!
